Chapter Twenty
Unsurprisingly, the curse someone had cast on the Creighton Coven was the main topic of conversation when I took my seat at the dinner table. Everyone was still abuzz about it. âHave you figured out who cast the curse yet?â I asked.
âItâs a mystery,â Aunt Isabel replied, unable to quell the twinkle of amusement in her eyes.
âYou should have seen it,â Courtney said with a snicker. âWe were glaring at them and they were glaring back at us, then all of a sudden, the lights started to flicker. When it stopped, every single member of their coven was covered in warts.â
âIt was priceless,â Eve added with a giggle. âEven Gillian Farque was caught up in it.â
âWhat did the normals say when the Creightons suddenly turned all warty?â I asked, trying hard not to burst into uncontrollable laughter. Grandmaâs hexing hand looked twitchy and she was just waiting for an excuse to use it on someone.
âThe Creightons had to pretend it was planned and that theyâd donned masks while the lights were going haywire,â Aunt Janet replied with a smirk.
âI almost wish Iâd been there to see it,â I said wistfully.
âThis should cheer you up, cousin,â Courtney said and handed me her cell phone. Electronics were forbidden at the dinner table, but Grandma allowed it this once. In fact, I was pretty sure she was hiding a smirk at her rivalsâ misfortune. I took the cell phone and saw a photo of the Creightons in all their warty splendor. It was hard to tell beneath the layers and layers of growths, but their expressions seemed to be even dourer than usual.
Unable to stop myself, I exploded into snorts and giggles. Georgina, their matriarch, looked worse than the others. She was nearing a hundred, was barely five feet tall and was slightly bent from age. The warts on her nose made it seem longer and more hooked than usual.
Haydn had his face turned away in the photo, so I could only see part of it. His usual handsomeness had been ruined by the curse. I pointed at the screen when I saw his fiancé. Farque had copped it the worst of everyone and was almost unrecognizable. âThatâs pure gold!â I howled. âIâve never seen anything that hilarious in my life!â
Courtney snatched the phone from me and slipped it back into her pocket when Grandma glowered at us. âWhomever cast that curse has painted a target on their back,â our matriarch said in disapproval. âThey should have been subtler. That curse was sloppy and amateurish.â
âYouâre just upset that they tried to blame you for it, Mom,â Aunt Isabel said.
âI have far more finesse than that,â Grandma replied with a sniff of disdain. âItâs insulting they thought for even a moment that I was responsible for it.â
âWho could be responsible?â I asked.
âWe donât know,â Aunt Janet replied with a shrug. âThey have a lot of enemies. It must have been a visitor from out of town. No one here has that sort of power, apart from Mom and Georgina.
